Wood rot is one of those problems that starts small and gets expensive fast. A soft spot around a window frame or a section of peeling paint on your fascia might not seem like a big deal, but left alone, rot spreads — and the repairs get more complicated and costly. Here’s how Memphis homeowners can catch it early and what to do about it.
Why Wood Rot Is So Common in Memphis
Memphis has a humid subtropical climate, which means long, hot summers with plenty of moisture in the air. That combination is exactly what wood rot needs to thrive. Fungal spores that cause rot are everywhere — they just need moisture and wood to grow. When your home’s exterior wood stays damp for extended periods due to rain, humidity, or poor drainage, rot sets in.
The areas most vulnerable are the ones that stay wet the longest: fascia boards along the roofline, window sills and frames, door frames, porch columns, deck framing, and any trim that sits close to the ground or near gutters.
How to Check for Wood Rot
You don’t need any special tools to check for rot — just your eyes and a screwdriver. Walk around the exterior of your home and look for paint that’s bubbling, cracking, or peeling. These are often the first visible signs that moisture has gotten into the wood underneath. Discoloration is another clue, particularly wood that looks darker than the surrounding material or has a grayish tone.
The screwdriver test is the most reliable check. Press the tip of a flathead screwdriver into any suspect areas. Sound wood will feel firm and resist the pressure. Rotted wood will feel soft and spongy — the screwdriver will push right in. If you find soft spots, the rot has already set in and the wood needs to be replaced.
What Happens If You Ignore It
Wood rot doesn’t stop on its own. Once it starts, it continues to spread to adjacent wood as long as moisture is present. A small rotted section of fascia board can eventually compromise the structural integrity of your roofline. A rotted window frame can let water into your walls, leading to interior damage and mold.
Rot also attracts termites and carpenter ants, which are drawn to soft, damaged wood. What starts as a rot problem can quickly become a pest problem, adding another layer of damage and cost.
The Right Fix: Remove and Replace
Patching over rotted wood doesn’t solve the problem — it just hides it. The rot continues to spread underneath. The right approach is to remove all the damaged wood and replace it with quality material that will hold up against Memphis weather. This is what we do at Healthy Home Pros.
We inspect the full area to make sure we’re catching all the damage, remove the rotted sections, and install new wood that’s properly primed and sealed to resist moisture. We also look at what caused the rot in the first place — whether it’s a gutter issue, poor caulking, or a drainage problem — so it doesn’t come back.
